Background
Artéma Recording Studio originated in 2008 out of the well known Alabama Student Company and under supervision of the Artéma Institute for Arts Management and Development. It is situated in the historic Heimat building on the NWU Potchefstroom Campus, Potchefstroom, North-West, South Africa.

During the last two decades the necessity for an own, local studio became more and more urgent. It also became clear that there was a need for help with other aspects of a CD project, such as copyright, graphic design and manufacture. Also, because artist development is part of Artéma’s policy, it was decided to address it in the form of workshops.

The studio, with a total surface of 17m X 6m, was designed by Pieter de Bruin and consists of a control room, general recording space, a drum booth and a solo booth. Construction began in August 2008 and was finished at the end of October 2008. To let the artist feel at home and because the studio is part of a cultural and historical building, the interior was finished with a warm cherrywood veneer and soft focused lighting.

The studio is equipped with gear and software of professional standard and is designed to accommodate various music genres. Because the main role players of the studio took emotional ownership, clients are ensured of a well kept studio, quality service and committed staff. Others with an interest in the studio are the Department of Culture and the current rector, Prof. Annette Combrink, of the NWU Potchefstroom Campus as well as the well known Johan van Rensburg of “Noot vir Noot” fame.

Artéma Recording Studio therefore brings services traditionally associated with the city to local artists. The studio has a built in advantage above the competition because of it’s established infrastructure, specialized pool of knowledge and affordable fees. It’s friendly, supportive and professional service creates an atmosphere where the artist can feel at home and be fully creative.
